motherhood as muse

Becoming a mother changed my entire sense of self. At first, my art practice did not survive. Thus, in order to ressurrect it, I had to lower the stakes.
This series of work consists of an ongoing practice in which I draw during my childrens’ naps. If one of them wakes up, I end the drawing and move on.
To complete these drawings gives me a novelty that stay-at-home motherhood does not often produce-- a sense of completion. In contrast to the load of work that is “never done,” to achieve a degree of completion this practice necesitates that the drawings be extremely small, only 2 by 4 inches. The subject matter reflects my anxieties, my sentimentality, my love, and sense of self.
This series is ongoing, and I plan to produce more larger paintings on canvas (such as figure 6) in contrast to the small works on paper, that reflect the immersive sense of intimacy that I share with my young children.
